This inspired me, Sarah, to add to our blog about how proud we are of our Merle puppies! We hope you come and get one from us soon! This article will tell you all you need to know about Merle doodles!
Merle puppies are eye-catching, unique, and often in high demand. Their beautiful marbled coats and striking eye colors naturally draw attention. But before choosing a merle Goldendoodle or other Doodle breed, it’s important to understand what the merle gene is, how it works, and why responsible breeding matters.

What Is a Merle Puppy?
“Merle” refers to a coat pattern — not a color.
The merle pattern creates a mottled or marbled effect in a dog’s coat. Instead of a solid color, the coat may have lighter and darker patches blended throughout. You might see:
- Blue merle (black/gray marbling)
- Chocolate merle
- Red merle
- Tuxedo merle combinations
Some merle puppies may also have striking blue or partially blue eyes.
Because of their distinctive appearance, merle puppies are often considered rare and highly desirable.

How the Merle Gene Works
The merle pattern is caused by a specific genetic gene that dilutes sections of a dog’s coat color in a random pattern.
A puppy only needs one copy of the merle gene to display the merle pattern.
However, when two merle dogs are bred together, there is a chance of producing what is called a “double merle.”
This is where responsible breeding becomes extremely important.

Are Merle Puppies Rare?
Merle puppies are less common than solid-colored Goldendoodles, which is why they tend to attract so much attention.
However, rarity alone should never be the primary reason for choosing a puppy. Temperament, health, structure, and responsible breeding practices matter far more than coat pattern.
A beautiful coat is a bonus — not the foundation.

Health Considerations: The Importance of Avoiding Double Merles
When two merle dogs are bred together, puppies can inherit two copies of the merle gene (double merle).
Double merle puppies are at significantly higher risk for:
- Deafness
- Vision problems
- Microphthalmia (abnormally small eyes)
- Other developmental defects
For this reason, ethical breeders never intentionally breed merle to merle.
A responsibly bred merle puppy — from a breeder who understands genetic testing and pairing — can be just as healthy as any other puppy.
Genetic testing and careful pairing are non-negotiable when working with the merle gene.

Coat Colors & Patterns You May See
Merle patterns can vary widely. No two merle puppies look exactly alike.
You may see:
- Large marbled patches
- Speckled or diluted areas
- White markings
- Tuxedo patterns combined with merle
- Blue or marbled eyes
Some merles have bold, dramatic markings, while others display softer, subtle blending.
Each one is completely unique.

Why Responsible Breeding Matters
Because merle puppies are in high demand, it’s especially important to choose a breeder who prioritizes:
- Genetic testing
- Careful pairing (never merle to merle)
- Health testing of parent dogs
- Early neurological stimulation and socialization
A reputable breeder focuses on health and structure first, color second.

Is a Merle Doodle Right for Your Family?
A merle Doodle is not different in personality simply because of its coat pattern. Temperament is influenced by genetics, socialization, and training — not color.
When choosing a puppy, things to consider:
- Temperament
- Health
- Socialization
- Coat Type
- Color as a bonus! (Merles are beautiful!)
