Genetic Health Testing: Why It Matters for Doodle Breeders

July 10, 2026

Health Comes Before Beauty

When families begin looking for the perfect puppy, they often ask about coat color, eye color, or whether a puppy is “hypoallergenic.” While those are important considerations, our first priority at Daisy’s Delightful Doodles has always been something much more important:

Health.

Every breeding decision we make starts with one question:

“Will this pairing produce the healthiest puppies possible?”

That is why every dog in our breeding program undergoes comprehensive genetic health testing before ever becoming a parent.

What Is Genetic Health Testing?

Genetic health testing allows us to look at hundreds of genes that can affect a dog’s health.

Many inherited diseases are recessive, meaning a perfectly healthy dog can carry one copy of a disease gene without ever becoming sick.

There is nothing wrong with that dog.

The problem occurs only when both parents carry the same recessive disease.

That is why genetic testing is so important.

When planning a litter, we carefully compare the genetics of both the mother and father to ensure we do not breed two carriers of the same disease together.

This dramatically reduces the risk of producing puppies affected by inherited genetic disorders.

We frequently use Embark Veterinary to genetically test our breeding dogs because it provides valuable information about health traits, coat genetics, and inherited diseases.

Why We Offer a Two-Year Genetic Warranty

Many breeders offer a one-year genetic warranty.

At Daisy’s Delightful Doodles, we’ve chosen to offer a two-year genetic health warranty because many inherited conditions that cannot yet be genetically tested often become apparent during the first two years of life.

While no breeder can guarantee every possible medical condition, we proudly stand behind our breeding program and the health of the puppies we produce.

F1B Isn’t Always Better

One of the most common requests we receive is:

“We’re looking for an F1B Goldendoodle because they’re the most hypoallergenic.”

Years ago, that was often recommended because breeding back to a Poodle increased the chances of producing curlier, lower-shedding coats.

Today, however, we have much better tools.

Modern genetic testing tells us much more than a generation label ever could.

Instead of focusing on whether a puppy is F1, F1B, or multigenerational, we pay close attention to the actual genes that influence coat type and shedding.

What Are Furnishings?

One of the most important coat genes is called the furnishing gene.

Furnishings create the fluffy eyebrows, beard, and mustache that give doodles their famous teddy bear appearance.

They also play an important role in producing the lower-shedding coats that many families are looking for.

Every puppy shown below has inherited at least one furnishing gene.

Although each puppy has a unique look, they all display the beautiful furnished face that is characteristic of doodles.

Furnished vs. Unfurnished

The easiest way to understand furnishings is by comparing a doodle to a Golden Retriever.

The Golden Retriever below is an excellent example of an unfurnished dog.

Notice the smooth muzzle, shorter facial hair, and lack of the beard and eyebrows that doodles are known for.

By comparison, furnished doodles have:

  • Fluffy eyebrows
  • A beard and mustache
  • A fuller muzzle
  • The classic teddy bear appearance

One furnishing gene is enough for a puppy to have a furnished face.

Through genetic testing, we know exactly which furnishing genes our breeding dogs carry, allowing us to make thoughtful breeding decisions rather than simply guessing based on appearance.

Shedding Is More Than Just Generation

Many people assume that a dog sheds because it has “too much Golden Retriever.”

In reality, shedding is influenced by several genes working together.

We evaluate both furnishing genes and shedding genetics when selecting breeding pairs.

Even dogs carrying a higher-shedding gene are often very low shedding when they inherit strong furnishing genetics.

This is one reason we enjoy breeding multigenerational Goldendoodles. We can make breeding decisions based on the dog’s actual genetics rather than simply the percentage of Golden Retriever or Poodle in its pedigree.

Temperament Is Just as Important

A beautiful puppy is wonderful.

A healthy puppy is even better.

But the very best family companion combines:

  • Excellent health
  • Stable temperament
  • Intelligence
  • Low-shedding coat
  • Loving personality

Those qualities are what we strive for every single time we plan a litter.

The Wonderful World of Doodles

At Daisy’s Delightful Doodles, we proudly raise:

  • Petite Goldendoodles
  • Mini Goldendoodles
  • Medium Goldendoodles
  • Mini Bernedoodles
  • Medium Bernedoodles
  • Cavapoos
  • Golden Mountain Doodles
  • Aussie Mountain Doodles

Each breed has its own unique personality, coat, and characteristics.

In future blog posts, we’ll introduce each breed individually and explain what makes them so special, helping you decide which doodle is the perfect fit for your family.

Ethical Breeding Makes a Difference

Unfortunately, not every breeder performs comprehensive genetic health testing.

Without testing, inherited diseases can be unknowingly passed from one generation to the next.

Genetic testing also helps predict coat traits such as furnishings and shedding, allowing breeders to make informed decisions instead of relying on chance.

To us, this is one of the defining characteristics of an ethical breeder.

Our Commitment to Every Puppy

At Daisy’s Delightful Doodles, we believe that responsible breeding is a lifelong commitment—not just to our dogs, but to every family who welcomes one of our puppies into their home.

Health testing, thoughtful pairings, wonderful temperaments, and lifelong support are at the heart of everything we do.

Genetics may seem complicated, but I truly enjoy helping families understand it in a simple way. If you ever have questions about genetic testing, coat genetics, furnishings, or choosing the right puppy for your family, I’d love to visit with you.
